The Drop Rig is a counterbalanced pulley system which is capable of simulating the effect of a very low speed impact, such as that of a spacecraft landing. Instruments can be bolted to the flat drop plate (40 cm diameter) and impacted in a controlled manner to achieve impact speeds of up to 5 m s -1. It was originally developed in order to simulate the landing of the Huygens probe on Titan, to investigate the response of the accelerometer mounted to the bottom of the spacecraft.
